attempt to stand up

"playing piano"

Why do young storks play the piano?
We often see young storks moving their toes quickly on the nest. We lovingly call this behaviour "piano playing". Here are the main reasons for this movement:
- Growth and cramp relief: Young storks grow very quickly. This rapid growth creates tension in their legs. Moving their toes helps to stretch their muscles and relieve cramps.
- Blood circulation: Chicks spend a lot of time sitting or lying down. "Piano playing" helps to start the blood flow and keeps their joints flexible.
- Muscle and balance training: This exercise strengthens their tendons and leg muscles. It also trains their grasping reflex, which helps them stay safe in the nest during strong winds.
- Nest comfort: Sometimes, they use their toes to move the grass and twigs under them to make their seating more comfortable.

Re: Tajo Internacional (Natalio/M and Zica/F)
playing with the griffon feather

First dark feathers
The black stork chicks on the streams are growing fast! They are now entering the pinfeather stage.
We can see small dark spots starting to appear on their bodies. Their first real flight feathers are emerging on their wings, creating a pattern that looks like lace.
In ornithology, this process is called developing juvenile plumage. The new feathers grow inside protective tubes (called pinfeathers) before they open up.
