We’ve been seeing this behaviour very often this season. What could be the reason for this reverse mating in Zica?
This season Zica is under strong stress. She laid 3 eggs already. When she is incubating, a foreign stork repeatedly attacks the nest. Before the egg‑laying period, the male also had to fight several hard battles on and around the nest.
Because of this constant pressure and instability, Zica may show stronger or unusual behaviours, including reverse mating. It is a natural reaction to high stress and the need to protect the nest and the pair bond.
