Short history of previous seasons

NEST HISTORY

Season 2025 viewtopic.php?f=165&t=278
- no nesting (female arrived on 22.05)

Season 2024 viewtopic.php?f=127&t=196
- 5 eggs, 4 chick hatched, 4 chick fledged (exceptional female)

Season 2023 viewforum.php?f=77
- no nesting (female arrived to the nest on 24.06 and stayed with male on this nest)

According to the information available to Māris Strazd, the nesting area of black storks has been known here since at least 2003, however, this nest was only found in January 2021.
The nest could have been built in 2010 after the previous nest was abandoned.
- In 2021, there were no chicks,
- in 2022, three young birds were successfully hatched. In the previous nest in this area, one of the old birds was ringed, while in this nest in 2022, both nesting old birds were ringless.

Hello everyone :)

What a surprise! :D

Video by Trīne - thank you very much!

Since I lost all the screenshots and GIFs from yesterday - a little explanation.
A silent arrival probably means female.
BS has a injury on her bow and a distinctive dark spot under the right wing.

Black storks (Ciconia nigra) have returned to Latvia earlier than in previous years, according to information on the website "Dabasdati.lv," where nature observers record their observations.
The first black stork was spotted in Skrunda municipality on March 5.
Until now, the earliest sighting of a black stork in Latvia was recorded on March 9.
According to information on the website "putni.lv," black storks winter in northeastern and eastern Africa. These birds used to be fairly common nesters in Latvia, but their numbers have declined significantly.
Between 2013 and 2017, 94–140 pairs nested. The black stork is a critically endangered species that is listed in the Latvian Red Book.
