The record-breaking black stork family was hit by tragedy

On June 5, the members of the Eagle Club decided to place the progeny under the care of animal doctors at the Estonian University of Life Sciences. At that time, only three of the six sons were alive.

The coordinator of the Eagle Club, Urmas Sellis, said that no one knows what has become of a father. "It is certain that he did not voluntarily leave his nest, something had to happen to him," Sellis said. It is not possible to determine the location of Isakure because he did not have a transmitter or a leg ring.

Herring diets

It can be assumed that the throat got into the power lines or was caught by some wild animal. As the permanent habitats of the black stork are protected in Estonia and their locations are classified, there is no reason to suspect that someone's evil handiwork is missing.

The black stork family model works in such a way that the female hatches the eggs and the male mainly feeds. When the male disappears, the female can no longer feed the chicks.

There are currently three barely three-week-old chicks of black storks in the animal clinic of the University of Life Sciences. So that the chicks do not become estranged from nature and lose their timidity, they will hardly see people while they are there. A black stork shape has been placed next to the temporary nest at the University of Life Sciences, which must depict females.

In order for the situation to be as similar as possible to what is happening in nature, a "male bird" called Toru feeds them in the nest. It is in the shape of a stork with an open beak showing a tube. Through it, Dr. Madis Leivits, a veterinarian at the University of Life Sciences, rushes to eat herons, mainly fish. Feeding takes place in such a way that the "male bird" inserts the head between the cloths, so the storklets cannot see the person.

Leivits said that her sons and fathers were well received by her sons. "Sometimes they also reach for the female bird and clap the beak and eat it, it means working."

At present, their main food is herring. Leivits explained that it is the easiest to obtain, although it is clear that the parents of the deaf people could not bring them herring from Jõgeva County. To ensure that the food table is rich and that nutrients and minerals are not lost, the veterinarians of the University of Life Sciences enrich the fish given to the pups with the necessary vitamins and minerals.

Moving to the yard

The health of the three surviving chicks is good. They will be taken to the wild as soon as possible, but they will also remain under surveillance for some time.

Madis Leivits and Urmas Sellis thought that maybe on Midsummer's Day, the storks will have real feathers instead of down, so they will have the desire and need to practice flying.

The plan is to take care of the storks so that they will be able to migrate south in the autumn. One of the preconditions for this, however, is that birds must learn to fly and retain their human alertness. "If they are not afraid of people, they are more likely to be lost," Sellis said.
