A tragedy hits the record-making stork family
The three black stork chicks are currently under the supervision of the doctors of the EULS, they have accepted the artificial mother nicely. The recovery of the chicks can be monitored in real time via the video server of the University of Life Sciences.
At the end of May, nature enthusiasts and members of the Eagle Club celebrated: a pair of black storks nesting in Jõgeva County, named Jan and Jaanika, had six chicks in the nest, which is extremely rare. Unfortunately, Jan disappeared without a trace on June 1, and the female could no longer take care of the offspring.
On June 5, the members of the Eagle Club decided to bring the chicks under the care of veterinarians at the Estonian University of Life Sciences. At that time, only three of the six sons were alive.
Urmas Sellis, the coordinator of the Eagle Club, said that no one knows what has become of a father. "It is certain that he did not voluntarily leave his nest, something had to happen to him," Sellis said. It is not possible to determine the location of the father stork because he did not have a transmitter or a leg ring.
