New father Madis got the basket with chicks 😉

Translation of Urmas's visit:

- 1 is dead, 3 are alive.
( He is asking whether to take the dead chick too or not)
( He is pulling up the basket)

- Like the situation shows, we have to take away the chicks and Madis will start to raise them in the veterinarian clinic of the University of Life Sciences.
* Dr. Madis Leivits- veterinarian in the Estonian University of Life Sciences.

(Takes the dead chick)
- One is already dead. It was most exposed to the cold, probably.
- The question was whether to take it or leave it here...there's no point so I will take it..
( takes the next chick and examines it)
- I can't say if it was the smallest one (referring to the dead chick).
- We are not going to feed them here, otherwise they will vomit it out. Once we get to the car, we can give them fish. We have fish with us just in case.
- It looks like the dead chick isn't the smallest one of them.

- Now the female will come back and see that here are no chicks. We scared her away. No partner either..
- This doesn't leave much hope that she will come to nest here on the next year, but we will see...
- We will leave the camera here for now to see what will happen.
- The three chicks will be fed by Madis for now, at some point we will probably have to move them somewhere to the forest, otherwise they get too used to humans. But we will see about that..at first they need food and warmth.
(Urmas sends the basket down)

- When yesterday it seemed like the female will be able to feed the chicks to some extent, but she hasn't found our fish baskets. It is difficult to help her.
- So, Madis got the chicks.
- We will leave the fish baskets as they are for now. Maybe Janika or someone else will go there and maybe we are able to catch her..(for ringing + transmitter)
- If she doesn't come to nest here, where will she go..
- But now the problem is with the male. Here was two females competing for the nest, but a new male is needed here in case Jan has died, which is likely, because he hasn't been seen in the sky. But we don't know exactly, there are no more data about Jan. Maybe he will appear from somewhere, but probably not.
- So now you have to look at an empty nest. The camera will stay here for now. Maybe if it needed somewhere else, we take it down, but no plans for now..
- Maybe we will put the camera to the forest later where the chicks go, but that's only a plan for now..they have to live that long first.
- This year was a fail, but in nature, everything doesn't always work.

He climbs down.

Information from Looduskalender https://www.looduskalender.ee/n/node/6740

VIDEO: Kurepojad viidi Maaülikooli inkubaatorisse The nests were taken to the University of Life Sciences incubator to recover

(GT translation)
The nests (Marika: chicks) were taken to the University of Life Sciences incubator to recover.
The hope was that the female Janika would find a snail with live fish (Marika: fish basket) in the nearby stream, which Urmas Sellis placed so that Janika could feed her chicks in the nest.
This is what the feed sump (Marika: fish basket) looks like: https://www.looduskalender.ee/n/node/6733
The three chicks, who have turned two weeks old, will be taken care of by veterinarian Madis Leivits for about a dozen days, and if they want young birds to grow up not accustomed to humans, they must build an artificial nest with a forest net where young birds can be fed unnoticed. The weed chicks will be able to fly in mid-July, and the migration will begin in about a month.
There are some puzzles, but we will keep you informed. The webcam stays on and we can see when the female returns to the nest, because last night's and today's old bird's behaviour was more about reconciling the situation.

MADLI (shortened on youtube chat)
They will be fed and warmed in the clinic for about 10 days.
Then they are trying to place them back into the forest - build an artificial nest and some kind of solution to be able to feed them without seeing humans.
