Karula National Park (Karl II and Kaia)

09.00 Kaia stands up for a few minutes. #3 is begging for food, it is biting the older siblings and is very active. Kaia doesn't feed yet.
09.15 Kaia takes care of the nest- arranging moss, aerating...little chick is begging and moving around. No feeding.
09.43 Kaia stands- all 3 chicks are now quite restless. No feeding again.

Kaia repeats the same action a few more times- stands, arranges moss and covers the chicks again.

10.25 Kaia stands..and just watches and waits.
10.30 The chicks stop begging and go to sleep. Kaia gives them shade.


10.37 She covers the chicks again.

10.55 Kaia stands, she does nothing...
10.57 Everyone is ready waiting..

and is the pip in the egg getting bigger?


10.59 Kaia doesn't feed and covers the chicks.

11.51 Kaia stands again, the chicks are anxiously waiting for food- they are begging. No feeding from Kaia.

12.29 Kaia stands, the chicks are very hungry!

12.35 FEEDING (3) Kaia regurgitates a small piece of soft food. Only #2 (?) finds it and eats. The others are already tired of begging.


Little #3 really needs to eat already...it hasn't had any food since hatching about 17 hours ago...

13.09 Kaia preens the chicks for a short moment.


13.12 Karl comes back! Kaia whistles- she tells him something- and leaves.
Kaia's nest duty was 7 h 05 min.

13.13 FEEDING (4) Karl offers small fish! At first, #3 is behind the older ones who already devour the pile of fish. Luckily the little one manages to squeeze itself between the others and get some good mouthfuls! All 3 eat good







This was the 1st meal for #3!

13.51 Karl is aerating the nest and the chicks are content and sleeping. Egg is talking?

14.07 Karl stands up, he observes his chicks for a short moment, aerates and covers his offspring again.


Someone starts begging right before Karl covers them.

14.20 Karl uncovers the chicks..the older ones are napping, #3 is begging.

14.21 FEEDING (5) I think that Karl initially wants to privately feed #3 who was the only one begging, but the others woke up too and were quickly at the table. Karl regurgitates a pile of soft fish. Some of it rolls directly in front of #3. All ate!

14.59 A LOUD bang! real-time lightning map doesn't show any activity. Maybe it's just thunder...or possibly a part of a military excercise ( the excercise field is not far from Karula NP)

15.06 Karl stands to give the chicks some air. He works with the moss and aerates the nest. #3 already raises its head to greet the parent too


15.29 There's a lot of squeaking coming from under Karl's belly
15.30 He stands up to see what all this noise is about...he preens the little one and aerates the nest.

16.00 Karl stands up..chicks are begging. #3 is behind the older ones and isn't active at first....Karl tries to regurgitate but that attempt fails. No feeding for the chicks.

16.32 Karl stands, he looks and preens the chicks.
16.33 One older chick makes a PS.
16.34 Good view on the hole in the egg. The chicks are begging for food.

16.55 Kaia comes home! Karl leaves.
