the changing area

However, our euphoria and new hopes were undercut by the reality of the new face of Affad, which we found in November 2018. Industrial farms, perfectly visible today even on satellite images, are being established in many parts of Sudan, previously beyond the reach of traditional agriculture. Unfortunately, also the river terraces in Affad were divided into plots, plowed with bulldozers, and the picturesque dunes - transported away by trucks. Our pitches ceased to exist in just a few weeks, despite marking them with metal poles and assuring us of their safety. Also for Affad, 2018 was a breakthrough - we lost that part of the archaeological heritage that is usually not visible. It is not marked by ruins covered with hieroglyphs or even stone mounds of graves.
