Belozem It is situated in the central part of southern Bulgaria, in the Thracian lowlands close to the largest Bulgarian river - Maritsa. This area is known in the country for its rice production and its wet soils. Each year more than 400 ha of rice fields are cultivated here.
The region includes also small parts of NATURA 2000 sites in Bulgaria: SPA “Maritsa - Parvomay“ (BG0002081, Area: 11,512.83 ha) and SCI “Reka Maritsa” (BG0000578, Area: 14,696.07 ha)
The leading attraction in Belozem is undoubtedly the storks that form one of the largest breeding colonies in Europe. The stork colony formed on the roof of the local school is very impressive and counts over 20 nests, which represent almost half of the pairs nesting in the village - about 40 in total.
Some of the largest rice fields in the country, which are key foraging habitats for the species, are located around Belozem.

With its rich biodiversity and rare animal species, Kisimovi Holes Wetland is a famous destination for photo-hunting.

The area has been declared protected by Order No. 155 / 11.004.1978 of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications under the Ministry of Internal Affairs in order to preserve the only natural site of white water lily /Nymphaea alba/ along the river Maritsa and in the interior of the country. It is located on the land in the village of Popovitsa, Municipality of Sadovo, with a total area of 1.0 ha. The territory is managed and guarded by the Town Hall of the village of Popovitsa under the control of Regional Environment and Water Inspection Plovdiv. "During an earthquake on April 18, 1928, the ground opened up and a lake appeared in the place of the stream next to the village of Popovitsa. In 1978 it was declared a reserve. There you can see white water lilies and white poplars.
For the period 1996-1997, the project "Conservation and educational activity in the protected area "M(a)rtvitsata" was implemented, financed by the Regional Ecological Center.
