Albaron
To the west of the municipal territory of Arles, on the banks of a meander of the Petit Rhône, along the national road leading to the Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer. Against the dike flanking the Petit Rhône, this hamlet was once a stronghold, of which only a tower remains, annexed to a fortified house from the 19th century, now called Albaron, with foundations dating back to the 11th century.
Opposite this tower, on the other side of the Petit Rhône, stands the La Motte tower, in the municipality of Saint-Gilles, which mirrors it.
Near the village, a very important pumping station brings the necessary water for irrigation into the Camargue Island, particularly for rice fields and, in the past, vineyards, which were flooded in winter to destroy phylloxera.

Rice farming
Rice farming has been present in the Camargue since the post-war period. Complex, this culture follows several stages: lifting, tillering, bolting, return and flowering. The land is flooded to promote the germination of rice grains and prevent the proliferation of fungi. Rice farming therefore requires freshwater irrigation and extensive drainage to develop the saltiest land. Huge amounts of water between the two arms of the Rhône (400 million m3 per year) are needed.
