Karula National Park (Karl II and Kaia)

20.59 A cracking sound comes from near the nest. Kaia listenes and watches with a long neck! She relaxes a minute later.

21.05 Another crack nearby.. this time Kaia isn't disturbed by it.
21.10 Again this sound. I think that some bigger animal could be walking underneath ( boar, deer, elk..)

22.25 The already familiar Ural owl is hooting in the distance ( plus all the other birds). But I'm sure this one is the most threatening for Kaia.
22.26 The owl sounds closer..
22.27 Kaia is in defensive mode. The owl must be flying past.


The owl(s) keep making voices...typical ural owl sounds plus a barking sound..

23.12 Loud and clear egg talk! Kaia immediately stands up as it starts! It sounds like there is already a bigger open hole in the egg- the voice comes straight out!


Progress on the egg? Looks like a piece of shell is already loose?

Kaia erects her back feathers from time to time. I guess she hears the chick.

00.27 Kaia stands up to aerate the nest. The chick is actively talking inside the egg. Only 3 eggs are visible and the infrared light makes them very bright.


A minute later 00.28 Kaia stands again and aerates. The chick is active. In fact..there may be even 2 eggs talking now There was a higher pitch voice and a lower pitch voice..

01.51 When Kaia takes care of the eggs, the eggs are talking very loud already. Looks like the chicks are very active and can't wait to get out. They continue to beep after Kaia settles down. Kaia can't find her peace and stands up to comfort and listen to the beeping eggs a few minutes later.

A better view to the eggs- no bigger progress yet.


05.08 A dent is visible on one of the eggs. Yesterday's pips are hidden somewhere underneath, can't see them.


06.12 Kaia aerates the nest bowl and arranges small tufts of moss, but no loud egg talk this time. The little ones must be resting for the next attempt to break out from the shell

07.34 Karl comes home and takes over the incubation! Kaia stands up and greets him. She rolls the eggs and then steps away. Karl is preening himself and doesn't go to the eggs immediately, Kaia turns around and whistles something to Karl. Then she decides to leave.
Kaia's incubation shift was 12 h 43 min.


07.35 Karl rolls the eggs and aerates. Both eggs are loud.
07.36 Karl continues incubation.
