Before their definitive departure for migration, the fledglings initially fly within an average distance of up to 200 meters, and as they get older, this distance increases to an average of up to 500 meters.
Better results are in surviving of the chicks which spend longer time in nest after fledging, means they return to the nest and step by step get independent, but are still getting food from parents in nest. For another 2-4 weeks after being able to fly they will go to the nest at night or rest at the nest.

female Zica - male Natalio

TOTAL FEEDINGS 🐠 6
The juveniles learn to search for foraging sites and acquire food only after their definitive departure from the nest (migration).

Natalio 3 feedings → 10:25 | 13:07 | 17:50 |

Zica 2 feedings → 11:00 | 14:27 |

Summary Highlights
  • Feedings: 6 feedings observed (10:25, 11:00, 13:07, 14:27, 16:05, 17:50).
  • Behavior: Fledglings spent periods away from the nest flying, returning periodically throughout the day for feedings before departing in the evening.
Daily Discussion Summary — Tajo (Spain)
  • High Provisioning Rate in Advanced Fledglings:
Observers highlighted the high frequency of feedings (6 deliveries throughout the day) provided to the three fledglings aged 84–87 days old, who continue to return to the nest regularly between flights.
  • Foraging Independence vs. Parental Investment:
Some viewers jokingly suggested that the parents should stop feeding them to encourage the young storks to leave the nest.
Vida-LI offered a thoughtful ornithological perspective, reminding everyone that Black Storks have followed this natural pattern for millions of years and there is no reason to "rush" them. She also pointed out that once the young birds leave the nest, they face a long and hazardous migration, and many will not survive to return. For that reason, every day they can still be seen safe at the nest is something to appreciate.
-----
1/ By tracking 35 chicks with transmitters, Polish researchers found that these young birds permanently left their nests at an average of 87 days of age, with a maximum of 108 days. (Dr. Anderwald)

2/ Survival rates are higher for chicks that spend more time at the nest after fledging, as they return to the nest and gradually gain independence while still receiving food from their parents. For another 2 to 4 weeks after becoming able to fly, they will return to the nest to rest or spend the night. (Dr. Strazds)

3/ Fledglings learn to search for foraging sites and acquire food on their own only after their definitive departure from the nest (migration). (prof. Zielinski)
