Not less than four black stork chicks are currently being cared for by their parents, the male 'Sol' and the female 'Sombra.' They make up the pair of black storks that live in the GREFA facilities, and you can watch their breeding cycle live thanks to a camera transmitting from their nest. 'Sol' and 'Sombra' are two animals that cannot be released back into the wild, but their offspring are perfectly viable.
In fact, once they grow up, we release these chicks into the natural environment to strengthen the wild population of this species. At the beginning of each breeding season, we remove their eggs from the nest and transfer them to one of our incubators to ensure a higher chance of success. Once the chicks are born, we return them to their parents, as you can see by visiting our YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@Grefa_fauna/live
In the video accompanying this post, you can see the moment when two of the four chicks are returned to our pair of black storks.

youtube chat info:
Good morning. Once the eggs have been laid, they are left in the nest for a few days and then replaced with plaster eggs.
The eggs are taken to the incubators. Once hatched the chicks are cared for about a week in the nursery.
Once they are found to be well and developing normally, they are transferred to their parents who finish raising them.

Re: SPAIN - GREFA Wildlife Hospital

A huge thank you for your wonderful Black Stork Forum!
It's been lovingly created and is a fantastic resource and documentation.
The list of links to the camera nests is also very helpful.
Thanks to everyone involved.

Thanks to the collaboration with the Jerez City Council, the black stork born last summer at the Zoobotanical Biodiversity Conservation Center in Jerez has been transferred to GREFA's facilities for its release in the Community of Madrid, along with other specimens born in captivity, with the aim of strengthening the population of this bird species in the region.
more info: https://www.jerez.es/noticia-simple-por ... 2wEZICAuXg:
.....This black stork comes from the pair residing at the center. It is worth remembering that the Zoobotanical Center is the first Iberian facility to have successfully bred this species multiple times, although no births had been recorded since 2019.
..... The species is classified as endangered, mainly due to disturbances in their breeding areas, as well as population declines caused by collisions with power lines, nest poaching, and the indiscriminate use of pesticides near wetlands, among other threats.

AI says:
NEST POACHING is typically carried out by humans, though animals like snakes or some predators might raid nests for eggs or chicks as part of their natural behaviour. However, when the term "nest poaching" is used, it's specifically referring to illegal human activity, such as:
- Stealing eggs to sell them (sometimes for illegal trade).
- Taking chicks to keep them as pets or for sale.
- Destroying nests to prevent birds from breeding, often in areas where people might want to use the land for other purposes.
Humans are the primary concern when it comes to poaching, especially for protected or endangered species, as it is a direct threat to the survival of these birds. So, when the black stork's population is mentioned as being impacted by "nest poaching," it's highlighting the harmful effect of human interference.
