Katrin explored and used the Polichintos Salt Pans as a feeding place.
Polichintos Salt Pans: Together with adjacent wetland areas (saltmarshes and seasonal ponds), it forms a 96 hectares wide wetland- nearly half the size of the Kalloni Pans. The usual overwintering bird species are recorded here: Avocets, Flamingos, Shelducks, Black Storks, etc.It is a paradise for shorebirds, year-round.

More info about the Kalloni Bay wetlands: https://www.kalloni-bay.com/bird-watching/

"At present 134 species of birds have been registered- the 66 are migratory without having included the particular species of the neighboring terrestrial ecosystems.
The last years, the activity of bird-watching at the particular wetland has flourished. The best season for this activity is in spring or in autumn. It is an activity adored by many visitors-naturists -number that is going to increase as a relative program of development is going to establish to the area all the necessary amenities ( installation of organized observatories, establishment of Environmental Information Center etc ). Species like stone curlew, avocet, black-headed bunting, white and black stork, pink flamigos, slag, littleEgret, gray heron, ruddy shelduk, bee-eater, ect."

Birdmap update 27.10.21

Previous data: 26.10.21. Distance 3284 km. near Polichintos, Lesvos island, Greece.
New data: 27.10.21. Distance 3392 km. (+108 km). Çandarlı resort and bay area. Izmir Province, Turkey.

Katrin flew east from the Lesvos island and is now back in Turkey! She stopped in the Bakırçay river delta wetlands near Çandarlı.
Image

The area is a delta system formed in the region where Bakırçay empties into Çandarlı Bay. There is a lagoon and various delta formations in the area near the Çandarlı Town.
Bakırçay Delta is important for waterfowl and shorebirds. Little tern (Sterna albifrons) and maple plover (Charadrius alexandrinus) are among the birds that breed in the delta. The area is also an important wintering ground for the flamingo (Phoenicopterus roseus).

New data: 31.10.21. Distance 3436 km(+36 km/2 days) Bakırçay Delta wetlands. Çandarlı resort and bay area. Izmir Province, Turkey

Katrin has stayed in the same wetlands area. It's a nice place for feeding and resting. Again, a very good choice by Katrin. She has had the luck of finding very important protected areas for stopovers. What a smart bird 8-) ...and probably very strong, because of good nutrition.

Katrin's migration so far:

Since Çandarlı area is an important wintering area for the flamingos, I looked at the climate data in that area:
Average temperature in November is 13.7 °C, but this week will be very warm in that area.
