Karula National Park (Karl II and Kaia)

16.57 FEEDING (6) At first Kaia regurgitates a bigger fish, it's not soft and none of the chicks can handle it. Then a huge amount of small fish comes out! Kaia even swallows some back immediately. All chicks eat, especially #3 who swallows a few small fish.


17.02 Kaia doesn't cover the chicks right away, she does some housework and arranges twigs.

17.59 Chicks are begging, Kaia checks them and starts preening herself.

18.03 FEEDING (7) Older chicks eat. #3 was behind them- it didn't seem to be very interested in food..


I hope it's just full and sleepy...
#3 is a very vocal chick- calling all the time, but still in the "egg voice"
That's why I can't hear or distinguish the 4th egg talking..

18.52 Someone is trying to get out from under Kaia's wing. Kaia listenes the chirping so sweetly.
Kaia stands up and makes a PS( small ) and preens herself.


18.54 One of the chick makes a PS on Kaia's foot.

19.08 Kaia guides the chicks with her bill- like at the start of the feeding. #3 is in front and climbs already high on the nest wall. Little one chirps a lot and begs. But Kaia doesn't feed it

19.13 Kaia pulls some moss closer. Now there's a high wall in front of the view again

19.26 FEEDING (8) Kaia guides the bigger chicks to the table serves a bigger fish with some smaller pieces. #1 and #2 eat fast. The moss blocks a lot of the view, but I think that #3 also got a few bites from that feeding...its head is moving between the bigger ones and looks like it's making swallowing moves.

20.00 Kaia stands and #3 us begging loudly. It bites its older siblings. Kaia preens herself and the older siblings with full bellies are resting. Little #3 is desperate for some attention.

20.12 #3 is biting the older sibling's wing. It bites others a lot...little and loud fighter


...but the size difference is already significant- #3 had fewer feedings than its older siblings in addition to the 3-day age gap..

20.47 Karl is back for the night! Kaia has a nice greeting for him.
Kaia's nest duty was 3 h 52 min.


Karl immediately covers the chicks.

20.59 FEEDING (9) Karl stands up and the chicks start begging. Karl regurgitates fish only in front of #1. #2 also gets to the right place...but where is #3? He just can't squeeze through the bigger ones...the others are stuffed to the throat! But little one stays hungry.




I already feel very sorry for the little one.
And I still have my doubts about the 4th egg..

... I already feel very sorry for the little one. And I still have my doubts about the 4th egg...

- every time there are worries
- every day is one big step for these quickly growing storklets
- if enough food is available no problem - when the two big siblings are full, the third can eating too
- it will be better every day for No3 - finger crossed!
