THE BLACK STORK IS BACK IN THE PARK AND THE STREAMING VISION
The Gallipoli Cognato Park has always liked to celebrate March 8 with the arrival of the Black Stork. We have been stopped for various reasons for two years, but finally the Black Stork webcams in our Park are back. And they're back in a big way! In these two years we have monitored another nesting site of this fascinating and rare species for Italy and thus our Park confirms that it is a precious treasure trove of natural biodiversity. A new pair is nesting among the rocks of Oliveto Lucano. From today you can learn more about the Black Stork of the Gallipoli Cognato Piccole Dolomiti Lucane Regional Park on the website https://cicognaparcogallipoli.it and observe the nest of Oliveto Lucano 24 hours a day here: https://cicognaparcogallipoli.it/cicogn ... iveto_live
But we will do even better: since the stork is a migratory species that spends the winter in sub-Saharan Africa, we will soon monitor the long migrations between Europe and the African continent, using GPS tools that will help us understand the migratory strategies of this rare and endangered species, still not widespread in our country.
Enjoy your vision and welcome back Black Stork!

The Black Stork returns to nest in the Gallipoli Cognato Piccole Dolomiti Park Lucane

The Gallipoli Cognato, Piccole Dolomiti Lucane Regional Park Authority has for many years activated specific monitoring projects aimed at one of the most important bird species iconic of the Lucanian territory: the Black Stork. It has now become the symbol of the Park,
the pair that reproduces near the cliffs of Castelmezzano is followed by over 10 years thanks to a monitoring project promoted by the Body, with the help of a web-cam that streams the images collected on the nest.
After thorough investigations carried out by appointed technicians, in 2020 a new one was identified black stork nest that has been added to the historical one. The new couple was found in the territory of Oliveto Lucano, about 12 linear km from the site of Castelmezzano in a hilly context characterized by more climatic conditions typically Mediterranean. Three years after the discovery of the new nest, after having verified the effective stability of the recent settlement, the Park Authority has proceeded to install a second web-cam which, together with the one active on the historic nest, will allow for the collection of valuable information on biology reproductive.
Finally, since it is a long-range migratory species, i.e. that spends the winter in sub-Saharan Africa, initiatives aimed at monitor the long migrations between Europe and the African continent, through the use of GPS tools that will help to further understand the strategies migrations of this rare and endangered species, still not widespread in our country.
The Black Stork had in fact disappeared as a breeder in Italy, where it returned to reproduce around the mid-1990s, with the first nestings ascertained in Piedmont. Since the early 2000s, reproduction was also observed in Basilicata, which has since become the stronghold of the species in Italy. In this In fact, as many as 12 nesting pairs in the region have recently been surveyed season 2022, compared to the 29 known for the rest of the peninsula. With two couples of Black Stork, therefore, the Gallipoli Cognato Regional Park, Little Dolomites Lucane stands as one of the most important protected areas for the conservation of especially, both at the regional level and at the national level.
In these two years we have also monitored the other nesting site of this one fascinating and rare species for Italy and so our Park confirms that it is precious casket of natural biodiversity and from today you can deepen your knowledge of Black Stork of the Gallipoli Cognato Piccole Dolomiti Lucane Regional Park on the website https://cicognaparcogallipoli.it and observe the Oliveto Lucano nest 24 hours a day here: https://cicognaparcogallipoli.it/cicogn ... ogallipoli
