Nest history (2021)
The Black Stork nest is situated in Jõgeva County in Estonia. We have known this breeding territory since the late 1990s, when black storks successfully nested here for many years.
After 2004, the nest site remained empty. The male bird Tooni, who nested here at the time, moved to the adjacent territory. The nest where Tooni moved, was the first Estonian black stork nest camera in 2005-2010.
Black storks came back to the nest seen currently on the camera only a year or two ago. It is an old artificial nest. We built a new platform in the early spring of 2021.
Considering the critical situation of the black stork in Estonia, it is a small miracle that the storks came back to here.

Black Stork 2 nest is situated in protected area, but that has been protected quite recently to fill quota for protection of fertile forest types. But just before protection there was performed full renovation of drainage systems, roads built, clear cuts made, etc So it will take long time somebody could say - it is a natural forest in this nature conservation area... Most probably here is needed also active restoration before to leave everything in peace, but also restoration means some "dust storm" in fresh water environment. Probably, this pair feeds outside a protection area with renewed hydrology, but we do not know exactly.

Jan and Janika in Jõgeva County (2021)

In 2021, we watched the activities of another pair of black storks - Jan and Janika. Probably due to the late arrival of the female, four eggs were laid relatively late 12-18.05. The chicks chated 14-17. June. One of the storlets died on July 12 before being able to fly. We do not know the cause of his death. Just before the flight, the three chicks in the nest were accompanied. In this way, we got an idea of ​​what they were doing even after leaving the nest. Two storklets died before leaving the nest forest. We do not know the exact cause of death, but there are signs of robbery. The third chick flew straight west of the nest to Saaremaa, then across the sea to Gotland, but a strong north wind pushed him too far for a long crossing, so he landed on a passing oil tanker at night. In the morning it turned out that he had chosen the tanker moving in the wrong direction and had been driving more than 200 km north at night. Thus, the next day, both the 200 km voyage and an additional 400 km to the Polish coast had to be made up. Also on this long day's journey, the young black stork took the opportunity to rest on a couple of ships sailing in the Baltic Sea. From the Polish coast, he chose a western migration flyway, flew via Germany and Belgium to France, where the signal of his transmitter disappeared. The future fate of the storklet is unknown to us. Despite the efforts of local bird lovers, no remains of the chick or the transmitter have been found.
