Karula National Park (Karl II and Kaia)

13.25 KAIA arrives. The chicks greet her with a growl as usual Karl leaves immediately.
Karl's nest duty was 3 h 32 min.


Kaia preens herself on the edge of the nest.
13.30 The chicks start twittering.

13.32 FEEDING (6) One frog and a few small fish. #3 pecks the little fish while #1 and #2 fight for the frog. Eventually Kaia eats it. Kaia's neck is still very thick- there's still food in there.

After a short breaks, the chicks are eready to eat again.

14.21 FEEDING (7) A huge water vole? It is definitely some kind of rodent! #1 claims it and swallows it! There is also someting very small, the others peck something.

That neck is huge!

#2 and #3 are starting to get hungry, they are already twittering very often.

15.40 KARL. Kaia leaves immediately.
Kaia's nest duty was 2 h 15 min.


Karl is preening himself. The chicks are watching him and learning important life skills


The chicks are asking for food. Only #3 and #2 are active. Karl takes a few minutes to find the good position and place for regurgitating.

15.46 FEEDING (8) At first Karl lets out only a few tiny fish, so that the chicks get first few bites. Then bigger fish follow, and also the third time regurgitating even more fish. Some bigger. some smaller. #3 and #2 eat a lot. #1 joins to take a few small bites too.

After some digesting and sleeping calmly under daddy's watch, the trio is twittering again.

17.40 Karl stretches himself and takes the feeding position.


17.42 FEEDING (9) The leftover big fish come out. Everyone gets a good meal! One fish is very big, the chicks fight for it. Eventually one older eats it.

19.39 The chicks are still happily sleeping and resting. They are not hungry yet.

20.49 KAIA arrives.
Karl's nest duty was 5 h 9 min.


Kaia will not feed the kids anymore this late.

05.27 FEEDING (1) Kaia regurgitates only a very small leftover piece. The chicks are sleeping, Kaia pokes gently #2 ( i think) who wakes up and eats the piece.




The others wake up soon after..

07.48 FEEDING (2) A lot of smaller fish. Everyone eat good!
