chicks begging again and again - they are (very) hungry
what says the Book to feeding:
-
feeding depend on the age and number of chicks on the nest
- number of feedings: usually from 2 to 12 per day
- duration of feedings: 55 sec.
- in the first 14 days, the male primarily procures the food for the chicks
- the chicks are allotted smaller portions of food until they are about 8 days old
other sources
- the border of the hunting area of a couple is formed by a circle with an approximate diameter of 20 km, in the middle of which the nest is situated (PL: 10-500 km2, FR/telemtery: to 870 km2)
- during its time in the nest, each young bird consumes approximately 14-20 kg of food
- the daily consumption is approximately 250 g
-
adult birds usually feed their offspring 4-5 times a day at an interval of 2-6 hours depending on weather and availability of the food, particularly in the morning and late afternoon
general:
- birds will feed their babies multiple times a day, every 3-4 hours for new hatchlings, every 5 hours for nestlings, and every 6 hours for fledglings
- nestlings get all of their liquid from food, so they can go as long as 24 hours without hydration
btw. the PL nest: feeding Flo/M 9x + Fer/F 6x = 15x, chicks hatched on 19., 19, 20. and 22.5 ("our" chicks hatched on 22.,22., 22., 23. and 24.05)
