NEST HISTORY

13.04.2021
The Black Stork nest is situated in Jõgeva County in Estonia. We have known this breeding territory since the late 1990s, when black storks successfully nested here for many years.
After 2004, the nest site remained empty. The male bird Tooni, who nested here at the time, moved to the adjacent territory. The nest where Tooni moved, was the first Estonian black stork nest camera in 2005-2010.
Black storks came back to the nest seen currently on the camera only a year or two ago. It is an old artificial nest. We built a new platform in the early spring of 2021.
Considering the critical situation of the black stork in Estonia, it is a small miracle that the storks came back to here.

In 2022, Jan and Jaanika arrived from migration in the second week of April. Jaanika laid six eggs in the second half of April, and a total of six chicks hatched at the end of May. This is known to be the largest black stork brood in Estonia (see more here). The youngest chick was eliminated by the female bird on May 28, but when the male bird disappeared on June 1, Jaanika was left alone to take care of the five chicks. She remained on the nest until June 3rd, when she eliminated one of the weakened chicks and left the others alone on the nest for the night to go in search of food. By that time, Kotkaklubi had installed a basket with fish in the stream near the nest, which Jaanika still could not find. The down-coated chicks survived the first night, but when the same thing happened on the second night and the third one died, it was clear that Jaanika could not cope with feeding and protecting the chicks alone. Considering that on average, only ten young black storks become capable of flight in Estonia per year, and the species is disappearing from Estonia, on June 5 it was decided to take the three young that were still alive under the care of a veterinarian at the Estonian University of Life Sciences. One of the three chicks taken to the clinic died. The other two were placed in so-called foster families, where young black storks of more or less the same age were growing up. In both foster families, the male birds wore a transmitter, so the Eagle club men knew their favourite feeding places and could organize additional feeding with the help of fish baskets. Karula's camera nest was chosen as one of the foster families. This made it possible to gather important information about the behavior of black storks when a so-called foreign son is added. The activities of the second foster family were monitored using a trail camera. The foster children were adopted, and partly thanks to the additional feeding places, food was distributed to everyone. However, only one of the step-sons was able to fly - Karula's nestling, who was named Bonus. The other died along with his step-brothers-sisters as a result of an attack by a goshawk. We have monitored the further movements of the nestling with the help of a transmitter. By now, he has reached the wintering grounds.

Jan and Jaanika in Jõgeva County (2021)
(2021 already here: viewtopic.php?p=1516#p1516)
In 2021, we followed the activities of another pair of black storks - Jan and Jaanika. Probably due to the late arrival of the female bird, four eggs were laid relatively late between 12 and 18. May. The chicks hatched between 14 and 17. June. One of the chicks died on July 12 before becoming capable of flight. We do not know the cause of his death. Just before fledging, the three chicks in the nest recieved transmitters. This way we got an idea of what they do even after leaving the nest. Two chicks died before leaving the home forest. We don't know the exact cause of death, but signs point to predation. The third chick flew directly west from the nest to Saaremaa, from there across the sea to Gotland, but the strong northerly wind pushed him too much to the south during the long crossing, so he landed on a passing oil tanker to rest in the evening. In the morning, it turned out that he had chosen a tanker moving in the wrong direction and traveled more than 200 km north during the night. So, the next day he had to make up for both the 200 km boat trip and an additional 400 km to the Polish coast. Also on this long day's journey, the young black stork took the opportunity to rest on a couple of ships sailing in the Baltic Sea. From the coast of Poland, he chose the western migration corridor, flew via Germany and Belgium to France, where the signal of his transmitter disappeared. The future fate of the young stork is unknown to us. Despite the efforts of local bird enthusiasts, the bird's remains and transmitter were not found.

Here are some things still to justify, but in general cam works and stork (who ever it is) restores the nest.
