However, our euphoria and new hopes were undercut by the reality of the new face of Affad, which we found in November 2018. Industrial farms, perfectly visible today even on satellite images, are being established in many parts of Sudan, previously beyond the reach of traditional agriculture. Unfortunately, also the river terraces in Affad were divided into plots, plowed with bulldozers, and the picturesque dunes - transported away by trucks. Our pitches ceased to exist in just a few weeks, despite marking them with metal poles and assuring us of their safety. Also for Affad, 2018 was a breakthrough - we lost that part of the archaeological heritage that is usually not visible. It is not marked by ruins covered with hieroglyphs or even stone mounds of graves.

Waba is located near the well-known archaeological site Affad 23. A few interesting facts about him:
The archaeozoological and geomorphological data published thus far (Osypinski, Osypinska, and Gautier 2011;Osypinska and Osypinski 2016) from sites in the southeastern zone of the Affad Basin (AFD23, AFD111, and AFD24) have pointed to the exploitation of periodically flooded riparian forests during the Late Pleistocene, with their characteristic mammalian species, primarily hippopotamus, kob antelope, cane rat, and buffalo, as well as crocodile and fish, mainly catfish. There were also animals such as chlorocebus, oribi, and dik-dik associated, albeit indirectly, with the flood zone, which inhabited an area of wooded grasslands (Table 1). ...

Hello everyone :-)

Birdmap update for WABA https://birdmap.5dvision.ee/EN/2022/aut ... =0&speed=1
(yesterday - very late evening)

Previous data: viewtopic.php?p=11078#p11078 and next
- 04.12.2022, Distance: 8478 km (+ 27 km)
- SUDAN: Goshabi - Affat, Northern State

NEW data:
- 07.12.2022, Distance: 8539 km (+ 61 km in 3 days)
- SUDAN: Goshabi - Affat, Northern State

Waba made a trip to Nizeiza, but most of the lines are in the area of circular irrigated fields. Our stork has its main localisation on the island El Fung, where Waba searches for food on the eastern side of the island (shallow areas) and spends the night not far north of this place on the coast of the Nile.
