to the Bayuda (Bajjúda) desert area (a geological wonderland hugged by a giant loop in the Nile just north of Khartoum)

- to the left is the Merowe Dam: the 4th Cataract is in the Manasir Desert, and since 2008, is submerged under the reservoir of Merowe Dam
and the only route through the Bayuda desert
