in new year Waba is looking for food in the area of New Halfa Scheme (Nubians displaced from Wadi Halfa); the site draws its water from the Atbara River, where the provides a reliable source for the irrigation project)
Waba started the autumn migration on August 28, so one day after the other fledglings flew out of the nest. In four days, he reached the Ukrainian-Moldovan border areas and stayed there for a week. In two days, he flew to the central Bulgaria, where he stayed for two days. Next, a week of flying to the Middle East, where he stopped for a few days in the Jordan River Valley and fed on fish ponds. Reached Africa a few days later across the Red Sea over Hurghada. Two days later, Waba reached the Nile, where it wintered in various places until mid-January. He then moved along the Atbara River to the agricultural area of New Halfa and is still there in March. On three occasions, Waba has tried to fly further east to the border between Eritrea and Ethiopia, but turned back. Probably there was too dry and no water.
