The Grand Departure!
It's time for the big departure has rang for the young Black Storks. IN 2022, as part of the CRBPO Ringing Program #320, we have continued GPS tracking of juvenile black storks in order to track their dispersion and study the causes of their high mortality.
The following map illustrates well the dispersion of young bird: fast, distant, a little unlikely and above all independent of any parental influence. These 4 juveniles left the nest less than 10 days ago are scattering and learning their future lives hundreds of miles from their birthplace. It is amazing to see that two of them have "spontaneously" found the royal migration path that is the western Pyrenees Passes.
Thanks to all the partners of the operation including Nature Nièvre, the ONF, the National Forest Park, the Regional Natural Park of Vosges du Nord, the LPO France.

Four black storks from the Odra River near Kostrztyn

On July 5, no one has heard of Odra poisoning yet. Therefore, a few kilometers from the river on one side and Park Narodowy Ujście Warty on the other, in the area of Dębno Forest District, we banded four very well-fed chicks 😘 As many as three of them received backpack loggers.
That is why we were very happy when on August 10 the stork DAREK flew towards Dresden on S / SW and now he is swinging a lot in Saxony 🙂
The day after him the stork STEFAN took off and first collapsed in the national park, then set off on the E / SE. Yesterday just passed Jeziorsko and flew to the hospitable black forests RDLP in Łodz for the night, where we managed to visit it before the evening and ... it is doing very well 🙂 Thanks to GPS-GSM technology, finding Stefan sitting alone on one specific tree among hundreds of thousands of others trees turned out to be quite simple 🧐
The third stork ARTUR was still sitting and sitting in the nest, and the poisoned Odra flowed and swam ... It took off only on August 17 on the S and, unfortunately, the record of its flights from that day indicates that it was feeding intensively on the Odra River 😢 😡It exists so a high risk that he has eaten some of the poisoned fish.
Usually, storks prefer overgrown shallow oxbow lakes with stagnant water, discreet canals and ditches, rich in a variety of food, rather than a swift, deep and open large river that they normally bypass. Out of several dozen of birds that have been tracked telemetrically as part of the BocianiMy project so far, this is quite an unusual behaviour of a stork.
The fourth stork did not get the logger, so we do not know its fate at all. Let's cross our fingers for Arthur and the FOURTH (Czwarty)!

Winter in Chad, summer in distant Ukraine

Tulek, a two-year-old stork from Tuchola, received the transmitter on July 3, 2021. And now summer is ending in... central Ukraine 🌤 He spent the winter in Chad 🌍 more than 4300 km to the SW, spring in SE Romania.
Yesterday he went straight into the region of war 😡 on the S towards Crimea! He passed the power plant in Zaporozhye, the wide valley of the Dnieper and at the height of Cherson he turned on the W to reach safe Moldova via Odessa.
Our two-year-old black storks rarely reach their country of origin in their first summer and spend this time a few hundred kilometers below, the most common are: Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania and Moldova, less often Turkey or Ukraine. It is only in the third year of age that they return to Poland, they are looking for life partners 😍 and free nests, which usually then only "hospitality" visit 🙂

Tulek spent his first summer not in Poland, but in central Ukraine, where he flew on the eastern route from ... Chad!

On August 19, Tulek felt wandering restlessness and initially headed straight for the Crimea!

Arthur from Kostrzyn in Upper Hesse

Of course, it's not unusual that ARTUR finally flew to the W and did over 400 km in two days. More surprising is that earlier for 9 days he was preying on the 50 km stretch, it is still unknown what poisoned Oder and ... took a flight 🙂
There could be some explanation from the ancestors of the Ciconiidae family the ability to digest not exactly fresh food, especially in chicks. Young black storks, as long as they are on the nest, are actually "carnivorous" to a certain extent. In the stork family we have examples of unique carnivores, for example Marabou stork. We will be following Arthur's fate and health very closely 🧐

one from the quartet is already dead :-(

Not all storks succeed ...

Unfortunately, the stork STEFAN from Dębno Forest Distric will no longer fly to Africa... 😞😢 Looks like Stefan was a unique loner and didn’t join any group of storks, most of whom had already left our country. He separated from the nest and siblings on August 11, initially took the right direction of migration east, but then flew north to Warmia.

He fished mostly on the Mediterranean water goblets, spent the night in the woods. On the evening of September 5, something bad happened while falling over. He probably collided with a tree during maneuvers between trees and died as a result of his injuries. The foresters from Dębno Forest Distric got to him very quickly, for which we thank very much. It turned out that the bird had a broken lower jaw and a cut-scratched wound (?! ) on the neck. No predator leaves such traces, which is why we deemed it an unfortunate accident. STEFAN has flown 1590 km since leaving the nest.

His siblings have chosen the western route: Arthur is now in France, Darek in Brandenburg.
Young black storks are often killed during migration, but as a result of collisions with power lines, shooting or from the Sahara desert. The collision with the tree has not yet been recorded by us.

Unfortunately, Dictaeus probably didn't reach Africa for just 53 kilometers. :(

pitty... Storks when they fly over the sea get very tired (we know that). So (many times) in the last kilometers they lose height and fly very low (1 - 2 meters above the water). Then it's the critical point that (so tired they are) they may fall into the sea and get "lost".
Even if ... (i say "if" but it's very small the "if") over the water the signal can show wrong and overturn the data (personally I don't believe it - I say the chances)

Michalis Dretakis Author
Eva Stets unless the transmitter left and floats on its own I see no other chance. He was flying above the sea level one-third of the way, half at about 100-300 meters, only initially he was higher but the strong downpours brought him down steeply.

Umm-el-rakham beach from where the signal is emitted. The signal is strange with successions up and down like moving up but the transmitter may have an issue. We hope it falls into good hands

So that's very sad news about the young storks : one probably crashed into a tree :? , the other (didn't have the strength? ) to get to the shore  . We know the death rate for the first migration is very high, but I hope the toll has already been taken and others will be more fortunate.
