CZECH. REP.

https://birds.cz/avif/obsdetail.php?obs_id=11230077
29.08.2022

(GT without correction till now)

34 individuals, of which 7 juveniles
7 ringed, 1 extra with tracking device on leg.
Rings read: 6684 (with GPS), 6557, 67HA, 68LM, 6400, 6879.
One individual had either an old or a foreign ring as it was small print and illegible.

When I arrived at the pond, I saw the first individual and after a while a flock of about 24 storks. The first group of 11 storks sat on the pines on the west side of the Ostrov pond only after 20 minutes of circling. Neither was circled. Others were still circling in the air. After another 20 minutes, the first ones started to sit on the field (marked place on the map) and gradually around 20 pegs sat there, including the ones from the tree. More continued to arrive over the next 30 minutes. They then gradually flew over to the Vulsík pond to hunt.
Fortunately, something scared them at the pond and they all sat down in their original place and it was possible to count them.

Points of Interest:
- they held groups of 4-8 during mass high circling;
- everyone chose exactly the same flight path from the field to the pond - to the far side of the dam, along the trees and over the dam;
- one of the storks in the field sat down on the ground, for 3-4 minutes;
- part of the storks stood on the embankment as if watching over the others;
- they didn't mind a moped driving along a dirt road 200 meters from them, but a barking dog from the village scared them off.
According to the fishermen, they were in the exact same place in the field the previous days as well.

info: stork 6684 was ringed on 04.07.2019 near the village of Pátek, district of Nymburk, Czech.Rep.
the place of observing is cca 170 km to the north from the ringing place/nest area

this stork will probably be a male and it will probably be the first time he has returned to his native region to look for a future nest

next question to Anitra (most probably the transmitter is from there)

we will see ;-)
even if I get access to this stork's data, it probably won't be on a daily basis here in the forum (we have 10 Estonian storks + FB news about Polish and others black storks with transmitter :roll: )

So some better news 🙂
Today we received a photo of one of our released black storklets. After 14 days, he was photographed in the south of France👍🙂. It looks very good and as you can see it flies to Africa via Spain. So keep your fingers crossed for him and his siblings that they make it 🙂.
Have a nice day everyone 🙂

HUNGARY

MME (Magyar Madártani Egyesületet) - Hungarian Ornithological Association
Baranya county (megye) - southern Hungary.

(GT - corrected)
This year is not about black storks either
During the winter nest mapping, we found 6 new nests of black storks, while 2 of the old ones were destroyed. We currently have the data of 28 nests in our register, including the changeling nests.
The black storks occupied only 12 of these during their return in the spring; two less than last year. However, 2 pairs did not even get to laying eggs, they skipped breeding this year. The 10 pairs that actually bred were not very successful either: 7 failed to breed, but the other 3 pairs raised only 6 chicks. There has not been such a small number of chicks in Baranya since 1990! The black stork's bad breeding streak continues for the seventh year.
