It's a shame that they didn't give him a ring when he was in the rescue station for so long. Now we can only guess whether it is him or not ;) .

Ptačí svět – časopis ČSO | Ročník XXXI, číslo 4/2024. Vydává a rozšiřuje Česká společnost ornitologická (ČSO).

National Black Stork Census

The preliminary evaluation of the black stork census shows that the decrease in numbers is local. In some areas, the population is stable (for example, in the Třeboňsko Protected Area, the Žďárské vrchy Protected Area), in some places the number has decreased (in the Český les Protected Area, in eastern Bohemia), and in some places, black storks have practically disappeared, such as at the confluence of the Morava and Dyje rivers. However, we are still processing and supplementing the results, and we would therefore welcome further information from the readers of Ptačí svět. Write to us or enter your observations this year in Avif if you have not done so yet. In some areas, there is a lack of observers, so every observation is valuable. We thank everyone who participated in the stork census and helped to obtain important data on the development of their populations.

GERMANY - Wensickendorf
Wensickendorf - a village incorporated in the town of Oranienburg, Oberhavel district, Brandenburg state, Germany

We have been caring for this young black stork in the wild bird rescue center since August 2023 due to an injury to its legs. It was released back into the wild on March 8, 2024. It has obviously decided that Wensickendorf is a good place to safely survive its second winter here.

"Seit 17.

This black stork has been in our care since August 17, 2023 due to a leg injury. The veterinary practice DVM R. Rafael & C. Grasnick treated the injury. The stork survived the winter months well. Its flight muscles were very well developed and so it was able to be released into the wild on March 8th.
The black stork survived the winter months without any problems. The cold temperatures did not bother it.

14.November (2024)

In mid-August 2023, we took over an injured black stork. He had to continue to be cared for over the winter. In February 2024, he was released healthy into the wild. Until mid-June, he was probably flying freely in our area. After that, he was not seen again. We hoped that he had set off south with other storks. But that was not the case. On October 22, he was seen again in our area. He is wintering in Wensickendorf for the second time.
