(GT) Skierka at wintering grounds in Greece
Skierka, a female black stork with a gps-gsm foot transmitter founded as part of the Storks project (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=klWLpvcqfE0...) arrived this year at its winter camp in Greece on the Struma River on September 11. More than a month later, we visited it to find out why our most famous black stork spends its winter there for the fourth time. The springs of the Struma are located in Bulgaria on the slopes of the Vitosha Massif, from where the river flows as a swift stream through the Rhodope Mountains. It is only in Greece that the Struma valley widens significantly, the river builds a rather complicated system of arms and supplies the artificial lake Kerkini. Struma and the lake are shallow and heavily silted, which is why it is a refuge for many species of fish, amphibians, reptiles and invertebrates. Local residents claim that Heracles, who shot his bow accurately, used to rest on the banks of the Struma. We managed to "shoot" Skierka resting in the marshy fields with 18 other storks. Struma and #LakeKerkiniNationalPark are a refuge not only for black storks, but also for many other interesting species of fish-eating birds.

BS from Poland with transmitter saved in Czech Republic

Unexpectedly late, on September 6️⃣ this year, a young black stork flew out of its nest in the Piotrków Forest District, State Forests 💚 It immediately flew southwest to Ratibor and then to the Czech Republic on September 7️⃣ . He flew over Ostrava and headed further south. At that time, there was nothing to indicate future problems 👌 on September1️⃣2️⃣; it stopped at a small pond 🏞 south of Brno. The next day, the locator showed that the stork was moving in a radius of only 50 m, but taking into account the accuracy of the logger, it can be said that actually it did not move. The only thing that was gratifying was that the locator showed the activity of the bird, so the stork lived ❤️. The place where he stopped was this large field with a small pond. Such a water reservoir is definitely an unsuitable place for a stork for a longer stop 🚫. Unfortunately, on September 1️⃣5️⃣, the transmitter stopped sending information about the stork's location. We didn't know for a long time what was happening to our stork☹️

👝 Unexpectedly, I received a message from my Czech colleagues that a stork had been found in a field south of Brno 🤗. The stork was in a very bad condition - that's why he was taken to Brno to an animal sanctuary, where he recovered his health in an aviary💚 It turned out that this little lake where the stork stopped was actually a sewage decanter, and the stork was probably poisoned there.
On November 5️⃣, the stork's condition was so good that he was released 😊 He immediately flew south. He slept in Slovenia on November 7️⃣ . He flew to Croatia on November 9️⃣ and spent the night near the border between Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina on the river Una🌅 on November 1️⃣3️⃣.

POLISH BLACK STORKS from the nest of WOLSZTYN

Two siblings - SKARLET and TYTUS - offspring of SKIERKA

video and maps on FB page:

Video comment:
Where are Skarlet and Tytus?
After Skierka last fed her young on August 18 https: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=khfpvfc ... 8&index=33, the male Titan fed them the next day and did not show up again. Both young storks took off straight from the nest and on August 21 began their migration along the classic eastern route. Contact with Tytus broke off in Hungary on September 20 on the Koros River. Skarlet, on the other hand, dropped her position for the last time on October 6 in Egypt in front of the Suez Canal. We do not know what their further fate is ☹ We are waiting ... Meanwhile, a farewell movie with young people still in the nest in the NadleśnictwieWolsztyn😊

🎬💃New Year's Eve surprise!
Frezja, the star of the series Black Storks Online, has just spoken from northern Ethiopia. Thanks to the installed GPS, we know that stork winters between the Lake Tana in Ethiopia and the Gash River in Eritrea. 🧐 Currently, Frezja has stopped over the small Soroca river, which flows through the savannas of northern Ethiopia, 50 km from the eastern border of Sudan.
The entire autumn journey, after the latest update, took Frezia 6️⃣7️⃣ days. The trip through the Sahara itself took 6️⃣ days. The total length of the conquered route (counting by accommodation places) was 💚4️⃣8️⃣0️⃣0️⃣ km. Florek has not spoken yet after the Sahara flight, we must wait patiently.
We would like to thank prof. Piotr Zieliński, Faculty of Biology and Environmental Protection, University of Lodz for informations about the fate of the storks from the project #blackstorksonline
And on this occasion, we wish you a WONDERFUL year 2022😍, fruitful in fascinating observations of nature and our black storks from the Łódź Voivodeship 😎
