the situation a year ago, when we first followed Karl's II spring migration, was as follows:

departure: CAR (23.02.2021)
- first birdmap data after winter silence: Distance: 1760 km, 08.03.2021, Sudan, White Nile state, Ad Douiem district (the newest localisation is not far from Wad Nimr on the west bank of the White Nile)
- Egypt (next data 15.03 Quena, 16.03 close to Gulf of Suez)
crossing the Gulf of Suez - (17.03)
- (according to the slider bar: South Sinay, Israel 17.03, Israel 18.03 - Lebanon, Syria 19.03)
crossing the Gulf of İskenderun (next data 19.03)
- Turkey (19.03 + 20. + 21. + 22. + 24.03)
crossing the Sea of Marmara 26.03
- Turkey/Greece (26.03) - Bulgaria (27.03, 28.03 + 01.04) - Romania (02.04) - Moldova (04.04) - Ukraine (05. + 06.04) - Belarus (08. + 09.04) - Latvia (10.04)

Until the next birdmap update, I can give a very brief overview of Karl II's current situation.

This year, Karl II started his migration on 24th February. He flew in NE direction towards South Sudan and Sudan.
Last data was sent a few days ago, on 4th March already from Sudan.

Fly fast Karl II and be safe!!!

probably something similar we have also this year (good coverage is only along the river Nile)
localisation on 04.03.2022 is not far from the localization on 08.03.2021

Yes, as we know that GSM coverage is very poor in Africa overall...I learned that already in the autumn when almost all of the storks "went missing" as soon as they reached Egypt. Probably they will be re-discovered once they get out of Egypt again
I'm sure we will hear from Karl II again in a few days. No need to panic yet..

Previous data: 14.02.22. Distance 10112 km. At his wintering area in the southern border of the Central African Republic, Mbomou prefecture.
New data: 04.03.22. Distance 1605 km. (starting from 15.02) Near Umm Sayyalah, North Kordofan, Sudan.

Karl II's locations from 24.02 - 04.03


Karl II's movement in his wintering area since 15.02 to 24.02. He started spring migration on 24th February.


On the first day Karl II reached the border of Central African Republic (CAR) and South Sudan. The next day he continued to fly and reached a resting area near Raga, South Sudan. There he spent the next 3 days. This is the rich savanna area not far from his first wintering area during autumn migration.

On 1st March Karl II continued his way in the NE direction and crossed to border to Sudan. From there he is ready to greet the big and wide desert.
On 2nd March he reached El Fula, a small town in Sudan.
On 3rd March he was near Al Ubayyd. This is the same route and stopping point from his autumn migration.

On 4th March Karl II made good progress and was near Umm Sayyalah, a village in North Kordofan district, Sudan. The last data is near Wadi az Zum. There is also some agricultural land in this area.

Karl II was not far from the White Nile. He probably took it as a guide of the way out of the desert.
