SUPPLIES
Fer x 2 moss and grass

FEEDINGS
Flo x 2, Fer x 2, but Flo brings the sharks!

The young are growing before the eyes of the hawk, they are too big for the hawk. Only accidentally putting the young one on the edge could result in a successful attack, but there is very little chance of that. So we can assume that this difficult period is 99% behind them

TRANSMITTERs
- the one from Spała (from 2020): Słudwia valley (Marika: https://www.birdingplaces.eu/en/birding ... wia-valley)

The analysis of the meeting with the tawny owl by prof. Piotr Zieliński

slo-mo VIDEO by prof. P.Z. Bociany czarne online 2022 - PUSZCZYK 24.06.2022 - TAWNY OWL 24.06.2022 https://youtu.be/3W9eNGWOz2s

🎬 SPIRIT OF THE FOREST ... KA🤪
On the night of June 24, 2022, a tawny owl visited the nest of our black storks. This is our old friend😏. He has already appeared on the nest several times, and on May 18 he even hooked his talons on the back of Florentino, which was then incubating 5 eggs. 🧐
However, by the time our Flo got up and spread his wings, getting ready to teach the aggressor a behaviour lesson, the owl had already flew away🤷‍♀️.
On June 24, the situation was similar. At night, a tawny owl flew over the nest. Who does not believe that ghosts live in the forest should watch this movie. Even from a distance, you can see the eyes of the spirit flying from the depths of the forest to the nest.
The tawny owl knew that there were no adult storks in the nest and that he could afford to be more bold in relation to the chicks. It came noiselessly (like an owl) and hit the back of a young stork with its claws, which at that moment was nursing its plumage. The completely surprised stork barely had control of its balance, and by the time it turned with the second chick towards the night vision, the aggressor was gone. 🫣
👉 The tawny owl can be dangerous only to small chicks of the black stork. But the little chicks are watched day☀️ and night🌙 by their parents. Therefore, in practice, the tawny owl does not pose a threat to the brood of black storks.
On the other hand, large owls such as the Eagle Owl and the Great Gray Owl do not nest in this part of Poland🤓.
Why then did the owl attack the storks? The black stork's nest is located in the territory of the Tawny Owl and the Tawny Owl does not like such company🤔. So he plagues storks. He knows that he cannot force them out of his territory, so he tries to scare them at least - maybe they will get out on their own. 😱
Fortunately, our storks like this nest very much - it is a place, thanks to which we can observe our Florentino family for the next season. 🥰

6:17 hawk visit, but it was a flight next to the nest, not over the nest, so the hawk did not even try to attack,

- I have the impression that it is more difficult to distinguish Flo of Fer now; Flo always looked like he came from the hairdresser, now he looks more neglected, it may be due to the fact that parents do not meet on the nest, and in the past, Fer used to often arrange Flo feathers on head;
- with this gender recognition, we do not take food into account! but for information only, wait for Flo / Fer to position so that the beak is parallel to the screen: Flo then shows that this beak is very long and that the Fer is "only" long. Flo are visible, but when Fer is dimly lit, they are visible as well, otherwise Flo is taller. When he puts his head up, his head runs out of the frame.

FEEDINGs
Flo - feeding x 3, Fer x 2. Flo brings some fishy trifle, but it is hard to return each time it is possible that Flo swallowed a shark in the morning and a lot of trinket, but he couldn't return the shark, or at least it was not clear if he had succeeded.

There was a thunder next to the chicks, but the storm didn't pass sideways. Better not to come back, because we'll get the signal. This season they are tempered more by heat than storms.

DELIVERIES: x 0, MATING: x 0.

FEEDINGs
- Flo x 2, Fer x 2 (including one feeding with extra/additional feeding)
- Flo brought medium-sized fish in the morning and frogs in the evening. And Fer stays with his frog specialization.

VISITs:
- 06:49:11 great spotted woodpecker,
- 07:10:18 the hawk flies from left to right behind the nest. You can see that the hawk is just peeking. Maybe he will already come to terms with the fact that there is nothing to look for him.

Piotr Zieliński:
- from Larysa's update shows that the hawk was only once 7:10:18, then the chicks were still disturbed, but it was not clear why.
- not everything that flies past the nest is a hawk. Once, even a bullfinch flashed. And since he did it close to the camera, it seemed as if he flashed very quickly.

TRANSMITTERs:
- the one from 2020 from Piotrków, who was about to fly to Poland, returned to southern Ukraine on the Dniester.
- the one from Kutno is still on Słudwia.
- they behave atypically, but summer is not over yet.

Renia P: Piotr - will you turn off the message for the time of ringing? Piotr Zieliński @Renia P: yes, we also check the installations on this occasion.

Today you can see that they both practice swinging and even jumping, e.g. from 18:27, the bangs distinguish them well - the one with the larger white fringe is the Younger, the one with the barely defined fringe is the Elder, 18:40 - beak game

DELIVERIES x 0
MATING x 0 - (they didn't even have the opportunity)

FEEDINGs
- Flo x 2, Fer x 2 ( 6:11 - the opposite of feeding: the Younger casts a pellet)
- Flo mixed food: fish and frogs, Fer specializes in herpetology = only frogs

VISITs
- 20:01 - buzzard, our old friend, our storks ignore it

TRANSMITTERs
- loggers remain unchanged

#bocianyczarneonline 🎬 SPULL
Many bird species swallow their prey whole🤔. Undigested and therefore useless debris: Feathers, hair, bones, fish scraps, reptile scales, insects' carbs, sometimes plant material and even sand🧐 are discharged by gagging 🤢 as pellets. Pellets are formed in the muscular stomach of the birds. In addition to disposing of indigestible debris, an additional function of producing pellets is that as they move through the esophagus towards the mouth, the pellets mechanically clear the esophagus of residual debris👍.
Pellets are usually dumped in places where birds spend the night or where they nest. They are usually oblong in shape. Their consistency and composition depend on the type of food and the species of bird . The formation of pellets was found in many groups of birds, such as: prey, owls, cormorants, grebes, herons, storks, waders, gulls, terns, shrimps, kingfishers, ravens, and even swallows.
#transmisjaonline and #science
The use of cameras 🎥 at the nests of black storks and conducting online transmission allowed for the conclusion that black storks also form pellets🤓. Previously, it was difficult to observe because black storks rarely shed pellets compared to white storks. The consistency of black stork pellets is loose, moist and therefore they quickly disintegrate after their return.
In the attached video, we can see a stork, tentatively called the Younger (this is the one with a white fringe on his forehead), which returns the spit and tries to find something edible in it. But all in all, it only spreads pellets all over the nest. The second stork, tentatively called the Elder (this is the one with the remains of the white fringe on the forehead), at this time cares for its plumage and practices yoga and presents us with its right leg and right wing.

#bocianyczarneonline 🎬 YOU CHOOSE THE NAMES
It is high time that our young storks were given names and introduced themselves to you
We would like to thank everyone for participating in the game, for all the suggestions (soooo much interesting!) And voting - we stick to the tradition of names beginning with the letter F, that's why the proposal by Katarzyna Jackowska, who is with us as Joanna, wins.
😎 Authors of the most popular proposals:
Kasia Wojtyła, Ola Szkudlarek, Waldemar Borowicz will receive special prizes from us 👏 📧 We are already sending you a private message!

behind the names
Question:
Piotr Zieliński: @Joanna - is there a story behind it, or did you just think of it?
Answer:
Joanna: Piotr, there is some history, because I did not want to repeat my defeat with Fart (I got it then😉) and I wanted the names to be gender-neutral, just that, and unfortunately no figo / fago spice 🤣

ringing
Piotr Zieliński: Tomorrow we will be at the installation around 11:00 and we will turn off the broadcast. It will take a while, but we don't know exactly how much. If an adult is around, we'll wait some time with everything. This is the only opportunity for us to look at the installation. Remove ants, check for water ingress etc, (Marika: tomorrow = 06.07.2022 is the ringing day on this nest)

edit 1:
Question:
TinaT: Piotr , about the loggers, I have a question - what do you think about backpackers like in Bolewice they got?
Answer:
Piotr Zieliński@TinaT - both have their pros and cons. We prefer leg-mount transmitter. There are many conditions here and it is impossible to say which is better.

edit 2:
Question:
Joanna: @Piotr , and this year there are fish for storklets as compensation for stress, are they so "fouled" that you don't plan?
Answer:
Piotr Zieliński: We will not. Because there is no such necessity, they have food ... we do not interfere without a clear need
