New updates about our online black storks!

Four young black storks successfully fledged from our online nest in the State Forests in Łódź during the 2026 breeding season. Onyks and Opal fledged first on 9 August. Initially, they fed together in the Kujawy region.

However, on 11 August, Opal moved near Żyrardów and later flew south. On 21 August 2026, while looking for a roosting site near Radom, Opal unfortunately collided with power lines in a forest clearing and died instantly (Fig. 1).

Onyks left Kujawy on 20 August, flying towards Głowno and then Poddębice. Along the way, he visited the Jeziorsko reservoir on the Warta River and continued towards Przemyśl. On 24 August, Onyks crossed the border out of Poland south of Medyka and stopped in Ukraine near fish ponds 22 km south of Medyka (Fig. 2), where he continues to feed.

Oskar left the nest on 20 August, but lost his life on the same day, just 5 km from the nest. Although we cannot be entirely certain what happened, around 13:00 on 20 August, the inexperienced Oskar was likely preyed upon by a white-tailed eagle in the middle of a meadow near fish ponds, where only plucked feathers were found. White-tailed eagles frequently hunt fish and birds at these ponds, and wild boars scavenged the remains during the night.

Oda fledged on 21 August and immediately flew south. She made her first extended stop on 24 August on the Danube River in Romania, before moving to the Tisza River in Serbia (Fig. 3). She is currently feeding on the Tisza floodplains near Novi Bečej, close to where the Tisza meets the Danube.

Watching the "Black Storks Online" stream shows how harsh nature can be for black stork chicks. The GPS trackers demonstrate that life after fledging remains challenging. Soon, the surviving birds should continue their journey to Africa, with approximately 4,000 to 5,000 km still ahead of them.

Mamy nowe wieści o naszych bocianach czarnych z gniazda online!

Z naszego gniazda online w lasach RDLP w Łodzi w sezonie lęgowym 2026 wyleciały 4 młode bociany czarne. Najwcześniej, 9.08, wyleciały Onyks i Opal. 1). Zginął od razu 21.08.2026.

Onyks 20.08 opuścił Kujawy i poleciał w kierunku Głowna, a później Poddębic.

Niedługo powinny wyruszyć w dalszą drogę do Afryki. Zostało im jeszcze około 4000 - 5000 km.

Hello everyone :-)

youtube chat @PiotrZielinski

Onyks pokazał nową pozycję, Oda jeszcze nie.

ONYKS z Ukrainy poleciał na południe na Węgry.
25.09 wyleciał z Wielkiej Niziny Węgierskiej i 25.09 przeleciał nd Karpatami Południowymi .

ODA podała pozycję 27.09: lata nad Cisą w górę i w dół rzeki 15 km w okolicy Novi Becej (Serbia). Czyli Oda bez zmian.

Ważne, że Onyks ruszył. Pewni Oda lada moment też to.

TRANSLATION

Onyx has shown a new location, while Oda has not moved to a new location yet.

ONYX flew south from Ukraine to Hungary.
On 25 September, he left the Great Hungarian Plain and flew over the Southern Carpathians. Onyx is now in southern Romania, above the Olt River, roughly at the latitude of Bucharest.

ODA reported her position on 27 September: she is flying up and down the Tisa River over a stretch of about 15 km in the area of Novi Bečej, Serbia. So, no change for Oda.

The important thing is that Onyx has started moving. Oda will probably do the same any moment now.

Spotkanie z Piotrem

Dobranoc Wszystkim.
Meeting with Piotr

PiotrZielinskiUL Good evening everyone. I’ll check if Oda has provided her coordinates yet—Onyks certainly has. On September 22nd, Onyks flew straight south from the Medyka area, crossing over the Carpathians twice. Covering a total of about 580 km, he stopped after crossing the Southern Carpathians, settling near a reservoir on the Olt River in Romania; he still has about 110 km to go to reach the Danube.

MKmatylda Twice?
PiotrZielinskiUL Yes; first, he flew across the Eastern Beskids in Ukraine, placing him inside the Carpathian arc, and later he flew out of that inner arc by crossing the Southern Carpathians along the Olt River. Onyks stopped at the point where the Pesceana River flows into the Olt reservoir. There are many such reservoirs along the Olt, but he is still in Romania.
PiotrZielinskiUL Oda left Novi Bečej in the Tisza Valley on September 28th and flew southeast. Oda is slightly ahead of Onyks; she crossed the Danube on September 30th and is already in Bulgaria, having stopped today by the Osam River.

Rubik.B Piotr, do you know the sex of our storks? PiotrZielinskiUL @Rubik.B – the sex determination is still in progress; that is, the electrophoresis remains to be done, but there aren't enough samples to run it yet, so we have to wait a few days for a dozen or so samples.

PiotrZielinskiUL and Fago from 2022 is already over the Sahara.
Good night, everyone.

October 7

Onyks 145 dni, Oda 143 dni

Spotkanie z Piotrem

Dobranoc Wszystkim.

Film od Monka234 z Marmara Golu:

Onyks 145 days, Oda 143 days

Meeting with Piotr

PiotrZielinskiUL Good evening, everyone. Onyks is still over the Olt River in Romania, but close to the Danube (and Bulgaria) now. Oda is already in Asia; she has stopped in Turkey at Lake Marmara (Marmara Gölü) near Izmir. As for the DNA results, the electrophoresis results aren't in yet. We don't do that part ourselves; our colleagues are supposed to run them once a dozen or so more samples arrive. It looks like Marmara Gölü is a freshwater lake, so Oda will be able to forage there.
MKmatylda So it's a feeding ground and she'll make a stop there—@PiotrZielinski, do we have any experience or information about other Black Storks foraging there?
PiotrZielinskiUL - No, ours haven't stopped there for any extended period.
AniaNaw I looked for live webcams, but according to AI, there aren't any; apparently, the lake has also almost completely dried up, so Oda can wade through it without any problem.
PiotrZielinskiUL - Yes, the fish might be accessible to her now. Oda made a good choice. Good night, everyone.
