SKIERKA flew away today. She's at the Ponds near Milicz. Maybe the male will visit the nest again tomorrow, but it looks like the season is over. Good luck to the Bolewicze storks. See you next year.

Obecność bielika w Połczynie zmusiła bociany do przedwczesnego zakończenia lęgów.

The presence of a white-tailed eagle in Połczyn forced the storks to end their breeding season early. The young left the nest between 22 and 24 July at 73–75 days of age, Bawarka on 24 July, and Mieszko on 28 July.
The white-tailed eagle tried to hunt the weak-flying young, but field inspections showed no worrying signs.
Today, one of the storks transmitted its location from an electronic ring in Germany near Wittenberg. So it seems that the breeding season ended successfully.
The white-tailed eagle will probably stop appearing now, and we hope it forgets about this place.
We wish the whole family safe travels and... see you next year!

Hello everyone :-)

email information (Dr. Anderwald):

....

...

One juvenile from Połczyn is transmitting and is currently in western Germany.

Unfortunately, none of the juveniles from Bolewic have connected.

Skierka, on the other hand, is in Hungary, having flown straight from Milicz, and is currently staging around Hortobágy National Park.

SKIERKA

PIC I will uploading morning

SKIERKA is back at her second home in Greece! 🇬🇷

Thanks to data from the telemetry transmitter carried by adult female Black Stork [#Skierka], we can analyse every kilometre of her autumn migration in detail.

Here are the most interesting facts and digital records from her autumn migration this year:

🐟 1. A big “refuelling stop” in the Barycz Valley

Before starting her long journey south, Skierka made a 143 km jump to the south-east on 24 July, travelling to the Barycz Valley. She spent as many as 27 days at the Milicz Ponds, feeding intensively. The fish in the ponds allowed her to build up the fat reserves needed to cross the mountains and other difficult areas.

🚀 2. Start and a record speed of 93 km/h!

The actual migration started on the morning of 20 August. Skierka crossed Silesia, the Czech Republic and Slovakia, and reached Hungary after only three days. She was there, at midday on 22 August, over the Tisza Basin, that she caught ideal winds and reached a record speed of 93 km/h, at an altitude of 1,168 metres above sea level!

🌡️ 3. 41°C on the thermometer and 23 days in Hungary

This year's migration took place during a period of extreme heat in Central and Eastern Europe. In the afternoons, the sensor on Skierka's back recorded temperatures as high as 41°C! Black Storks are very sensitive to the drying up of feeding areas, so Skierka followed a route along large rivers. She stayed in Hungary for 23 days, including Hortobágy National Park, Lake Tisza and the Körös River, where she had plenty of water and abundant food.

🏔️ 4. Sky-high “air conditioning”: 2,703 metres above sea level over the Balkans

The heat also had one positive effect – it created powerful thermal updrafts. On 17 September, while crossing the mountainous areas of Serbia, Skierka reached an absolute altitude record of 2,703 metres above sea level, using thermal currents.

Interestingly, while the temperature near the ground was around 25–28°C, at an altitude of 2.7 km it dropped to a refreshing 11°C. By flying so high, the bird was literally cooling her body!

🇬🇷 5. A safe haven in Greece

On the afternoon of 18 September, after flying across Bulgaria, Skierka reached her regular wintering area – the valley of the Struma River and Lake Kerkini in Greece.

Her entire journey took 30 days, including only 7 days of active flight and 23 days of resting and feeding.

She has now reduced her daily movements to just 1–3 km. She is resting and feeding in the Greek wetlands.

Let's keep our fingers crossed for Skierka and wish her a safe winter in Greece! 🖤🤍

origin:

SKIERKA już w drugim domu w Grecji!
Dzięki danym z nadajnika telemetrycznego dorosłej samicy bociana czarnego #Skierki możemy dokładnie przeanalizować każdy kilometr jej kolejnej jesiennej podróży.
Najciekawsze fakty i cyfrowe rekordy z jej tegorocznej wędrówki jesiennej:
🐟 1. Wielkie "tankowanie" w Dolinie Baryczy. Zanim Skierka wyruszyła w długą trasę, 24 lipca wykonała skok o 143 km na południowy wschód – do Doliny Baryczy. Na Stawach Milickich spędziła aż 27 dni na intensywnym żerowaniu. Ryby ze stawów pozwoliły jej zbudować rezerwy tłuszczowe niezbędne do pokonania gór i trudnych terenów.
🚀 2. Start i rekordowa prędkość: 93 km/h!
