Hello everyone

While the adults are already arriving at their nesting grounds, our focus remains on the fascinating movements of the younger birds still navigating the Mediterranean.
After spending a few weeks wandering east around Cogolin, now covered 1,522 km.
Iksi after a quick round-trip excursion south from the Messolonghi area, current total stands at 1,586 km

This shift to south is likely a reaction to the current agricultural activity in the area. As the rice fields are being prepared and flooded, the increasing presence of heavy machinery and "agrotechnological" bustle is probably pushing the stork to seek quieter spots.

Arvo’s Journey - 5th May 2026

Arvo spent the last night on his favourite night spot near the town of Saint-Gilles. He began his flight in the morning, heading North-East.

Arvo flew a long distance today, covering approximately 280 kilometres. He followed a very direct route through the Rhône Valley. He flew past the cities of Avignon, Valence, and Grenoble. The weather conditions along this corridor usually provide good thermal winds, which help storks fly long distances without using too much energy.

In the evening, Arvo arrived in the Haute-Savoie region, south of Geneva. He chose a safe place to rest by the Fier River, near the village of Le Pont Coppet. This area is perfect for a Black Stork because the river and nearby trees provide both water for feeding and safety for the night.

Arvo’s Journey 6th May 2026

Arvo started his day at his roosting site by the Fier River in France (where he slept the night before). After resting and likely feeding in the morning, he took flight and continued his journey towards the North-East.

Today's flight was very interesting. Arvo flew past the city of Annecy and moved towards the Jura mountains. He flew directly over the city of Geneva. During this flight, Arvo officially crossed the border from France into Switzerland. He followed the western side of Lake Geneva (Lac Léman), keeping the water on his right side.

Arvo finished his journey for the day near the town of Divonne-les-Bains, right on the border area. He chose a wooded area for the night.
As you can see on the map, he is spending the night in a small forest patch. This location is very close to the border line between France and Switzerland. It is a quiet spot, which is very important for a Black Stork to feel safe.

Arvo’s Journey 7th May 2026

Arvo began his morning at his roosting site in the forest patch near Divonne-les-Bains, right on the French-Swiss border. He took off early and headed North-East, following the line of the Jura mountains.

Arvo covered a lot of ground today. He flew past the city of Lausanne and continued over the beautiful Swiss countryside. He travelled roughly 120 kilometres in a straight line, but as you can see from the map, his actual flight path was much longer.

An interesting thing happened today! On the map, you can see a large "loop" or zig-zag pattern near the towns of Murten and Kerzers (west of Bern). This usually happens when a stork finds a good place to feed or encounters strong winds. Arvo spent some time circling and exploring this area before deciding to continue his journey further north.

For his overnight stay, Arvo chose a perfect location near the city of Solothurn. He landed in a quiet area right next to the Aare River, near a place called Aare Inseli. This is a classic Black Stork choice - settling near a river gives him a chance to hunt for fish or frogs in the morning before he starts his next flight.
