Four young black storks equipped with satellite transmitters: the Gallipoli Cognato Park continues monitoring the species.

On July 7th, the operations of ringing and equipping four young black storks with satellite transmitters were completed. The chicks were born in the nest of Oliveto Lucano (MT), as part of the project for monitoring and studying the species promoted by the Gallipoli Cognato Piccole Dolomiti Lucane Regional Park.
The intervention was carried out by the staff of the Park and ISPRA, along with ringing ornithologists and an expert climber, with the support of the Basilicata Region. This was a teamwork effort combining scientific and management skills with the objective of deepening the knowledge of one of the most elusive and fascinating species of European avifauna.
The project, launched in 2012, represents an important research and conservation activity dedicated to the black stork in Basilicata. The application of satellite transmitters will make it possible to track the movements of the young individuals during their migration towards their wintering grounds, collecting crucial data on migration routes, stopover areas, feeding sites, and the main risk factors the species encounters along its path.
The experience gained over the years confirms the importance of this type of monitoring: indeed, every piece of information acquired contributes to guiding increasingly effective protection interventions and strengthening cooperation between research institutions, authorities, and bodies committed to the protection of biodiversity.
In the coming weeks, the four young individuals will take their first flight. A long-awaited moment that will offer new knowledge useful for the protection of the black stork and biodiversity.
