🖤 Sad news about our black stork Waltraud

Many of you have been eagerly following Waltraud's journey since her tracking began in late summer. Now we have an update that deeply moves us.
Waltraud has traveled long distances on her journey again – and over the past few weeks, we’ve been able to collect valuable data about her behavior and migration route. However, we’ve now received news that, of course, we had hoped to hear otherwise.
What exactly happened, what the situation was like on the ground, and why her data remains incredibly important for our conservation work, we report in detail in the current and, for now, last blog post 👉 blogs.nabu.de/hessen https://blogs.nabu.de/hessen/?fbclid=Iw ... QjyJE9eNqw

Thanks to everyone who has accompanied Waltraud – and to the local partner organizations that have supported us.

🖤 Sad news about Waltraud, the young black stork

Waltraud had been tracked since late summer and traveled long distances, including through Doñana National Park toward Gibraltar. Sadly, recent data showed that she was likely predated by a Bonelli's eagle northeast of Tarifa. Her transmitter has been recovered.

Despite this loss, the tracking provided over 30,000 valuable data points on her movements, which will help NABU and BirdLife partners improve conservation for black storks in breeding, resting, and wintering areas. The blog will pause for now, but updates on black stork protection will continue in the future.
