- Rice is harvested every year between September and October, when the rice fields have dried out.
- Rice growing also plays an essential role in the ecological balance of the Rhône delta. By desalinating the land, it has helped to maintain the fragile balance of this region, which was previously essentially made up of salt marshes and salt steppes. The rice paddies create freshwater spots where migratory birds like to congregate during periods of drought.

Arvo moved from the rice fields for night time to the main area there - on the shore the Étang de Vaccarès (Lake) in the area of the Parc naturel régional de Camargue:

"This saline lake is a natural reserve. Although the Etang de Vaccarès is the Camargue's biggest brine lake (some eight miles long, covering around 16,000 acres), at no point is it more than two and a half yards deep.
Known as La Grand Mar, it is surrounded by the Petit-Rhône and Grand-Rhône rivers, as well as the sea. It is a haven for animals and anyone passionate about nature and wildlife…"
