"SKIERKA, the most famous female black stork in Europe, has just returned today from its permanent Greek wintering place - the wide valley of the Struma River near Kerkini Nathional Parc. It was the sixth time she had wintered there. She spent 143 days on the Struma. She took off from Greece on March 3 at 9:00 a.m. and landed in Poland at the nest in the Bolewice Forest District on March 11 at 14:00. SPRING MIGRATION 2023 https://www.ciconianigra.sk/viewtopic.php?f=102&t=160
05.03 - 12.03 (7 day), 1520 km

"Today Skierka returned from her Greek wintering grounds 🌍 to Bolewice Forestry District. Along the way she passed all the nests she knew for a total of 8 nests and stopped at one of her favourite feeding grounds between the lakes of Miedzichowski Park Krajobrazowy. In 8 days she covered ✈️ 1520 km, a fast spring pace. Along the way she only stopped for one day at the Reserve Stawy Milickie, but rather only because there was a cold front and gusty wind in N Poland yesterday. Welcome to the country 😍 😘"

Mr. Dariusz Anderwald:
Ze Skierka wszystko ok, ale jest jeszcze w Grecji. Nie wiem dlaczego nie rusza. Moę dlatego ze zrobiły się tam ostatnio bardzo zimne noce nawet poniżej zera.

Everything is fine with Skierka, but he's still in Greece. I don't know why he's not moving. Maybe because the nights there have been very cold recently, even below zero.

The famous celebrity stork #Skierka constantly surprises us! For the seventh time she spent the winter by the Struma River in N Greece 🇬🇷 However, this year she still does not fly to Poland 🇵🇱, which is shown by today's readings. Why so ? Temporary warming here, but by the #Struma river in Macedonia it is still very cold ❄️, especially at nights when temperatures over the past week have reached as much as -1 degree Celsius. Perennial average weekly temperatures preceding the day of departure ✈️ for the last six winters are: minimum 7 degrees, maximum 25 degrees, average 16 degrees. Temperature on the day of departure is also about 16 degrees. It seems that our Skierka is "warm" 😍 and she is still waiting for the right moment, that is. warm nights and a wind from Africa, which will take it quickly to the north of the continent 😉

Good day. Today at 9:13 Skierka left the Struma river valley and FLY! At the moment she is approaching S Serbia 🙂 She should be at the nest in a few days. It would be good if Królewicz/Prince was earlier.

Safe fly!

"1:58 PM Dariusz Anderwald Dzień dobry. Skierka jest teraz na S Węgrzech. Jeśli będzie miała dobry wiatr powinna być w Bolewicach w niedzielę lub raczej w poniedziałek."

"1:58 PM Dariusz Anderwald Good morning. Skierka is now in S Hungary. If she has good winds she should be in Bolewice on Sunday or rather on Monday."

approx.1000 km as the crow flies
Storks fly an average of 250 km/day, and in favourable conditions even 300 km or more.

Dzień dobry, niestety lot Skierki uległ małemu opóźnieniu. Jest teraz pośrodku Węgier koło miasta Szolnok. Standardowo leci 7 dni, więc powinna tu być 25-26 marca. Samiec poczeka.

Good day, unfortunately Skierka's flight has been slightly delayed. She is now in the middle of Hungary near the city of Szolnok. The standard flight time is 7 days, so she should be here on March 25-26. The male will wait.

-----
In my opinion, she is not in delay:
- approx. 1000 km from the nest : 250 km/usual distance per day = approx. 5 days/arrival probably 26.03.2025.
- in very favorable weather conditions it can be more km in one day and it can take only 4 days
- but it can happen that the stork for some reason does not fly directly to the nest and it can take more than 5 days
- we will see ;-) safe flight!

Czekamy 🧐

#Skierka took off from the area of #Kerkini_National_Parc on March 19 and headed north to Poland 🇵🇱 In her wintering grounds in Greece 🇬🇷 she spent 169 days in the valley of the #Struma river, a dozen or so kilometers wide and several dozen kilometers long, full of inaccessible ditches and canals. It is a good place for a dozen or so black storks wintering there: calm, rich in food and warm: temperatures below zero are rare here throughout the winter. Since she is an adult bird, Skierka has been making her spring migration very briefly, i.e. in 7-9 days. Today at noon Skierka passed the city of #Szolnok in central Hungary 🇭🇺 If the wind is good (preferably warm and southerly), she should meet the #Królewicz/Prince in just 2-3 days. We are waiting 🧐 (GT)

Deszcz i prawie zerowy wiatr zatrzymały dziś Skierkę na stawach pod Szolnok. Pogoda ma się tam poprawić dopiero w środę. CZEKAMY

Rain and almost zero wind stopped Skierka at the ponds near Szolnok today. The weather is not expected to improve there until Wednesday.
