Re: Rīgas mežos
I need search more information
A long-term nesting area of black storks in the territory of SIA "Rīgas meži". The nest is located on a platform that was built in 2020 in place of the broken branch of the natural nest. The live broadcast system was installed on 29.03.2024. in cooperation with SIA "Rewind" and SIA "Rīgas meži".
"Rīgas meži"/Riga Forests Ltd is a municipal company founded in 2008. It takes care of the neighborhood. 62 thousand hectares of forest, 453 hectares of Riga gardens, parks and parks, 367 hectares of cultural and recreational parks “Mezaparks”, as well as sustainable development, biodiversity and accessibility of these territories to the public. NEST HISTORY (GT)
According to the information available to Māris Strazds, the nest site has been known since 2003, and according to its size and other characteristics, it is estimated that it was built here in 2001. Since 2006, this nest has been checked almost every year.
There were chicks in 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2015, 2018, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, but relatively many of them died (of starvation) right there at the nest or in it. The main reason is that there are a large number of ditches around the nest, which, depending on the course of winter and spring, can give the stork a false impression that there will be a lot of food available. During the season, the situation can change very quickly, and there is nothing left to feed the chicks. It is known with complete certainty that it was successful in 2011, because one new bird of that year has marked itself in this area in 2019, when the natural nest had fallen.
A bird ringed in Lithuania (young female) has also been noted in the photo traps that have been at this nest for several years. At the beginning of February 2020, an artificial nest base was built in place of the fallen nest (Jānis Ķuze, M. Strazds and SIA "Rīgas meži" ranger Oskars Taupmanis) exactly at the place (and height) where the natural nest was, 14.3 m above the ground.
The online system at the nest was created in early 2024 by Jānis Ķuze and Jānis Rudzītis, with the participation of SIA "Rīgas meži" representatives Edmund Račinskis and Oskar Taupmanis.

Hello everyone
information from dabasdati forum by Verotaja - thank you very much! (documentation with pics - https://forums.dabasdati.lv/viewtopic.p ... 24#p387124)
GT:
- 7.20 One flew into the nest
- 8.36 Another stork flew up, grabbed the one in the nest by the neck and threw it out of the nest. Both glided down together
- 8.37 One of the storks returned to the nest, still whistling very excitedly
- 9.21 The second stork returned to the nest. To the one in the nest it is of the opposite sex (as both will greets).
However, their relationship does not look like that between two storks who have spent several days and nights together.
The female looks a bit surprised and reserved, the male overly excited about the meeting. It is suspected that the male is not the same one that was here before.
- In the chat, Fey also recorded a sign of difference - the two who were together at night had bright red bills. The male seen in 9.21 has a distinctly dark bill.
- The female stood very restrained, did not engage with the dark bill.
- 9.34 Approaching the third. With a red bill. The male with the dark bill stands with his back to us, the female is in the middle.

- 9.34 bill between bill
- The fight continues
It seems the female also got involved
- One with a red bill stayed in the nest, two outside
- 9.35 The dark bill returned and attacked the remaining one. The fight continues
(so the female and the male with the dark bill have flown away from the nest the day before)
- The dark bill chased the red. The dark-billed screeched very excitedly until 9.57, when it flew away from the nest itself.

- From 10.04 to 12.14 the dark bill stayed in the nest, occasionally flying out and returning again.
- 12.11 Another stork flew past the nest, but did not fly into the nest. It must have been a female because the one in the nest whistled and then lay down in the nest
It looks like the female's partner was the one with the red bill she was with yesterday and last night, but she is not interested in this dark bill
