Increased concentration of mercury detected in Latvian black storks in organisms
24 March 2024 TVNET / LETA https://www.tvnet.lv/7986187/latvijas-m ... centracija

A study by the Institute of Atomic Physics and Spectroscopy of the University of Latvia on the concentration of mercury in black stork organisms has revealed that mercury can be found in egg shells and membranes, as well as in the faeces.

Mercury and its compounds are toxic - they can cause both various health problems in humans and animals and pollute the environment. One of the most harmful mercury compounds is methylsmer silver. This is characterised by accumulation in food chains as a result of bioaccumulation and biomagnification processes, and small concentrations of mercury may accumulate to a level dangerous to health.

Unlike white storks, which are omnivores, black storks are fishers, and their menu is mainly made up of small freshwater fish. Therefore, they are at greater risk of mercury intake, the researchers explain.

Suspenseful bird livestream season in Latvia

Black stork in Ogre

Last year's male, Ogris, returned to the black stork nest at the end of March and immediately set to work on improving the nest. The female arrived on April 2 and was named Urga. They were also surprised by a snowstorm, and the online audience had the opportunity to see how the storks endure snowy days in their nest. On the night of April 17, the first egg was laid, followed by the other four eggs exactly two days apart. The first two stork chicks hatched on May 22, two more the following days, and the fifth egg never hatched. On June 18 the chicks were ringed.

Urga and Ogris were diligent in caring for the chicks and the nest, regularly arranging and improving it, bringing twigs and moss, and food for the storklings, mainly frogs and small fish. At the end of July, when the grey down of the chicks was replaced by feathers and the nest became too cramped for all four, the youngsters began to inhabit the nearest branches and soon made their first flights. On August 14, when Urga arrived with the food, there was no one left in the nest - the new generation had already left. The next day, an Ogris arrived to check on the home and was never seen again.

Black stork population declines in Latvia
15.11.2024 https://eng.lsm.lv/article/society/envi ... oN1_hvIZw

... Ornithologist Māris Strazds is blunt: it is almost impossible to maintain the population of black storks in Latvia. When asked how the black stork is doing in Latvia, he said: "Terrible, and there is no chance that something will seriously change for the better." ... :(

or Latgales Reģionālajā TV:

In Latvia, micro-reserves are created for all nesting eagles, vultures, black storks, capercaillie, as well as some species of owls and woodpeckers. However, it has been observed that the population of black storks in the Baltic States and Poland is declining at the fastest rate compared to other Western European countries. The country currently has around 330 Black Stork micro-reserves covering an area of 6,600 hectares, but experts believe that the actual number of breeders is at least three times lower.
