unusual events on the nest

weird behaviour by adult stork

experts opinion

1/ Māris Strazds, Latvia (May 12)
... I cannot comment. „Females sit on males” is a form of reversed mating. I don’t think this is it. I would say some next days might show if my thoughts might be in right direction – I have a few cases with trail-camera images when we can see result, however there is no detailed information in those cases how this start. I mean cases when there is a shortage of food and adult kills juvenile at some point. Could this be the case? ...

2/ Darius Anderwald, Poland (May 14)
... hmm, it's hard to say. They're just animals. I wouldn't look for anything more than some kind of tension relief. ...

3/ Luis Santiago Cano Alonso, Spain (May 14)
... From my point of view, this is simply a weird behaviour of a specimen, as there are many others. ...

Urmas Sellis (June 28):

I think we have very brief data about such behaviour. It is extremely difficult to fix short time events in nest, especially near the end of
nest life. So web cameras or advanced trail cameras can give us more such cases in future.
Also, some behaviour could happen as exception. If not benefit to the species, it will be flushed out within the evolution.

Dr. Maris Strazds (30.06.2024)

... I agree with what Urmas wrote about difficulties of getting such observations and consequently our very poor knowledge. Just one question. How sure are you about identity of attacker? I wonder if it could be one of adults. I do have at least one such case. ... "

I am not sure. I don't want look at it in detail - according to the shots I have, I can't rule out our male.
Btw. Vida - our male, Libe - disagrees, both are very good observers
