Black stork and white stork tied together
20. February 2024

(GT translation without corrections yet - there is also photo)

“The uneven couple noticed me on my way home on my way home with the bike from Lustadt just before Westheim on a field,” reports Thimo Höffner, a passionate hobby photographer. The next morning he packed one of his cameras and set off on his way to work. And indeed the black stork and the white stork were still in the same place. “I have been photographing animals for quite a while now, and I have already met black storks every now and then, but always only near the water while fishing, and they were extremely shy,” says Höffner. The black stork near Westheim, on the other hand, behaved just like a white stork, poked for food about 20 metres away from the dirt road and was not impressed by the passing cycling enthusiasts.

“I had suspected a similar sensation as it had last year in Lüder in Lower Saxony. A pair of white stork and black stork has actually raised two young, which are called grey storks. Until then, experts thought that was impossible, because the two species have completely different lifestyles,” says Höffner. It could also be this pair from Lower Saxony on the return flight during a rest, he thought. For this reason, he has also informed the Nature Conservation Association (Nabu) Lingenfeld. However, Sabine Heilmann vom Nabu's answer had somewhat disenchanted him, says Höffner.
Nabu: Derailed stork

It was the third report within the last few days, Heilmann said. “This seems to be a somewhat “striped” black stork, which was repeatedly sighted last year and behaves absolutely untypically – and, among other things, acts militantly with white storks from a nest near Lingenfeld,” Heilmann wrote in her answer.

March 16

The stork in Wensickendorf has returned for the night. It looks like a young stork and has a ring.He even chased away other birds (unfortunately I can't tell what kind of birds they were). I think he feels at home, even though this nest is so close to people.

I asked about the ring, I haven't received an answer yet.

Birds raised in captivity and in the presence of white storks and humans usually behave this way.

Thank you for video :D
