WABA (2022)

Post by marika.solo »

in this thread we follow WABA (hatched 2022) from the streamed nest in Karula National Park (we follow Waba's 2nd spring-summer migration)

WABA colour ring number 718W 3CY
(CY = calendar year; birds are aged as the number of calendar years they have lived in, with the year they were born in as the 1st calendar year and increasing past every January 1st.)

data source:

birdmapdescription:
Juvenile Black Stork grown up in the nest of Karula webcam. One of three local chicks, with a foster chick added as a fourth. In order for the young to be in normal condition by the time they leave the nest, we fed the parent birds with fish. The parent birds took the fish to the nest and all four chicks got enough to eat. Waba started the autumn migration on August 28, so one day after the other fledglings flew out of the nest. In four days, he reached the Ukrainian-Moldovan border areas and stayed there for a week. In two days, he flew to the central Bulgaria, where he stayed for two days. Next, a week of flying to the Middle East, where he stopped for a few days in the Jordan River Valley and fed on fish ponds. Reached Africa a few days later across the Red Sea over Hurghada. Two days later, Waba reached the Nile, where it wintered in various places until mid-January. He then moved along the Atbara River to the agricultural area of New Halfa and is still there in March. On three occasions, Waba has tried to fly further east to the border between Eritrea and Ethiopia, but turned back. Probably there was too dry and no water.

WABA is most probably the eldest offspring of Karl II and Kaia hatched in the season 2022.

Spring migration 2024
The autumn migration stops in mid-February and the spring migration continues from the following day, the 15th = the bird map is set for spring migration and the new distance measurement starts from 15.02. However, the birdmap is sometimes ready a week or two later.
Our storks appear on the map continuously when they reach areas with GSM coverage after starting their journey north.
