KALVI (2023)

Post by marika.solo »

in this thread we follow KALVI (hatched 2023) from the streamed nest of Karl II and Kaia in Karula National Park (we follow 1st spring-summer migration of this stork)

KALVI colour ring number: 7192 2CY
(CY = calendar year; birds are aged as the number of calendar years they have lived in, with the year they were born in as the 1st calendar year and increasing past every January 1st.)
data source:

birdmapdescription:
Tracked chick of Karula webcam nest in 2023.

-----
Kalvi is one of the tree siblings (former Nr 2). In the night 26./27.07 chicks received metal/ornithological and colour plastic ring and Kalvi got also transmitter (backpack).

Spring migration 2024
The bird map is set for spring migration and the new distance measurement starts from 15.02. However, the birdmap is sometimes ready a week or two later.
Our storks appear on the map continuously when they reach areas with GSM coverage after starting their journey north.

It seems we lost this storklet :-(

Kalvi probably made it into the group of the 80% of the black stork chicks who perish even before they reach their wintering areas. Hard to believe. (I was hoping very much that the stork would stay in Bulgaria for the winter.)

(Btw. we lost Karl II and most probably Kaia too and one of their chick Kalvi from the Karula nest - all 3 with transmitter :-( .)
